By Dennis M
14 years ago I owned a Fender Princeton 65 solid state amp. It was one of the finest SS amps I have ever played. (50 years now..) When I moved, I downsized my gear and had sold that amp. I regreted that ever since. Knowing that the circuits employed with the Frontman Series share those of the old 65, I just knew this offspring could produce the same results in a smaller package. I was right. It does with the same sparkle Fender is famous for. Rich bass tones mixed with the standard EQ presents a fantastic aray of tones that defy logic from such a small amp and a single 10" speaker. I am highly impressed. The analog transistor circuits provide the same punch and drive that the old model I missed does, but with less volume. That's good really as I no longer need that much power. However, this amp will, set on 3 or 4 on the clean volume, produce a surprising clean tone with plenty of volume to make the walls rattle. The overdrive channel is as I remembered too. It is not a heavy metal drive, but with setting the gain just under 3, you get what sounds just like a clean amp that has a TS808 OD pedal in front of it. Taking it up a notch or two will give a good OD as well. Going further, is not that great, but then again, this amp responds well to all pedals I put in it's signal path. OD. Chorus. Analog Dealy. You name it, this amp is VERY pedal friendly indeed. That's a plus as I was able to get a hard OD with a metal pedal that gave me goose bumps when I kicked it in! If you need bone crunching drive, use a pedal. Simple. The spring reverb does wash out after 4, but then again with a delay and such, it works out great. As a stand alone amp playing without a single pedal at all, the OD and the clean channel are just fine as it. The reverb is a great touch and lends to the overall tone of the amp.I still had the footswitch from the old 65, and it works just right to kick in the OD channel and out. Love that part. Seldom do you see an amp this size with spring reverb, a foot switch jack for channel changing, and a good workable EQ. And this all at a price under most of your basic stompboxs! I'm blown away. This is truely the little brother of the old 65, and I am so happy I bought this amp. The red tolex is really great too. I've had many an amp in my day, but never a red one. Well until now that is.The stock speaker is average in it's ability to handle the amp's output. As it breaks in, it gets better. However, I will replace it with a Weber speaker later. But for now, shucks, I'm really having the time of my life with this amp. I've played many a tube amp and solid states. In fact, this amp has replaced a Laney 15 watt tube amp that failed to have half the tone this Fender SS has, and that tube amp had a 12" speaker in it. The Fender Frontman 25R has greater depth and bass responce than that Laney that cost over 4 times the Fender did! I may have parted with my old 65, but this little 25 is staying right here! It's that good.

I'm not a Fender fan, but this is a great amp. Great clean channel and decent overdrive. This is an amazing deal. It's $10 less than the black model. I can't see my self paying more just for a color. The red isn't bad looking. I can't see myself outgrowing this amp. Way better than any 25w Line6. It sounds pure, not digital. Good for rock but not metal. With the money saved you can buy a decent pedal anyway. Hope this helps.

By J. Paul
At first I thought the clean channel was really noisy, but I realized I was using one of my cheaper cables. Having a good quality cable makes a big difference. I swapped in a better cable and the clean channel is clear as a bell. Exactly what you should expect from Fender. I have the Texas Red, and it's beautiful. Very sturdy, it's built like a tank. I don't think this amp will ever let me down. You really can't beat the quality and price. And the built-in spring reverb is a nice bonus.
