By silia
The PetGear I-Go Traveler Plus is the largest upright wheeled carrier that PetGear makes. There are very few carriers that are similar from other companies and most do not try to address a high weight limit. I imagine that PetGear took a standard rolling suitcase model and applied a few modifications to it to make it pet friendly. What they came up with is a workable solution to transporting a heavy pet but with definite room for improvement.First, I have a 20 pound cat. She's got to go to the vet every three months. She's pretty heavy for standard crates. I have recently tried the Hagen Cabrio Pet Carrier but was put off after using it 3 times. The PetGear Plus is definitely more durable than the Cabrio. The Cabrio felt like it would shatter if stressed in a complete Fail, while the PetGear Plus feels like a midprice piece of luggage: good for moderate use but will probably start to show wear. I bought it in pink to humiliate Cat for being so hard to carry.General assessment:-Frame: Decent for the size of the bag. Not completely framed out as the front relies on the fabric edging and side stiffness to hold its shape. The front face caves in slightly when it falls onto this side.-Telescoping handle: Again, like a midprice piece of luggage. Does the job but could be beefed up a bit.-Backpack straps: I did not use these. I wanted to wheel her, not hike with her. Before the first use I restrung them (since you can't take them off) through the back slip pocket intended for car seatbelts (?).- Shoulder strap: Did not trust strength of this piece so I just replaced it with another I had with metal clips.-Bottom wheels: Seems to do the job, but I keep it to level ground and am careful going over stoops. They aren't the largest wheels. The placement of the wheels are adequate but, just like the similarly shaped luggage, this carrier can easily fall over when the ground shifts (in cars or trains).-Size and shape: Like other reviewers I am sort of surprised at the height of this carrier. Standard pet carriers are shaped to accommodate animals lying down. This carrier is supposed to be for pets that sit up during transport (dogs?) but I think it's also for more stability when you tilt the carrier to wheel it. I bought this size to ensure she fit lying down on the bottom (she JUST does). The smaller model would have been height appropriate but I am loathe to take away any floor space.-Pet Friendly: So, in order to wheel it you have to tilt it. Cat doesn't like tilting. Too bad big Cat. The interior is just big enough for my large cat to lie down. Putting a folded beach towel on the bottom helps pad it enough for her, since the provided pad just covers up the frame. The front zippered door is all mesh and quite large. When you tilt the cat she sometimes falls against this mesh door and it bows out until she gets back down. Also, the large expanse of mesh means she's very exposed and feels a bit freaked about it. The double zippered mesh door is also the only way into the carrier. If she was fighting me I could see problems with claws stuck in mesh while trying to shove her in and zip it all up.Changes that I wish they would make:- Change the front mesh panel into a mesh and solid panel to beef up its strength and provide more privacy for the pet when it is lying down. Bonus: add a solid "windowshade" that can secured over it with velcro.- Beef up the internal frame, especially on the front face. This would help the carrier keep its shape despite either the shifting weight of the pet inside or if the carrier falls over.- Provide a compartment in the base to store more items. It could be accessed from a zippered flap in the front like a flip down drawer front. (See Lug Puddle Jumper)- Let the backpack straps be removable.- Provide an additional built-in buckle strap to wrap around the entire carrier for additional security/stability. The access flap is only held by the zipper, which could conceivably break or work open. I would recommend adding a luggage strap to the current model when you're using it over long distances.- Beef up the telescoping handle. This is the main selling point for me. It better not fail.- Have a wheel assembly you can replace. Apparently people have reported they can't get these fixed.- Add an additional carry handle, as the one provided (next to the telescoping handle) tilts the carrier a lot if you try to pick it up this way.- Finally, add a size in between the Plus Traveler and the Traveler, as this would suit a lot of pet owners (like me).So, I would recommend this carrier, but I am hoping that the next version of this carrier makes it even better.

Our cat is 7 yearsw old and weighs in at just about 15 pounds. This is perfect for us to transport her around. She sits in it in the front seat and I sit in the back seat!! Yes, she is a queen! Well made too. She can sit up in it to look around or lay down. Good purchase and we always get compliments on this and on her.

Greatest pet carrier ever! This item was especially useful when I had to move with my cat. I even took my cat with me to Walmart in this carrier. I took video of us there, it was so cool... many people walked up to me to see what kind of dog I had in this cute carrier and were so surprised to see my absolutely beautiful almost 15 lb Main Coone cat with me instead, Lol! I bought this 'up to 25 lbs' size so there would be plenty of room for her inside, and also in case I get a 2nd cat in the future. She loves going places with me instead of being stuck at home all the time. I also bought her a 'dog walking body harness & leash' from another store and am teaching her to walk outside with it. Why should dogs have all the fun! Only drawback was that when it was sent to me the interior comfort pad was missing, This company handled my call professionally and gave me a credit to cover the cost of replacing it, so I put another fleece pad at the bottom for my cat to be comfortable on.
