By Justin
After owning the t50p for several months now I've gotta say it's an incredible piece of German engineering. I'd like to make some comparisons with other headphones / earbuds I owned or demo'ed, which I think is the best way to help you with your purchasing decision.* VS Sennheiser HD650 (own)Sound: In general HD650 has a warmer tone signature while t50p has a "clearer" nature. t50p has the edge in high frequency clarity but not as powerful in the bass department. Note that this doesn't mean it's lacking in bass, just not as powerful. Also it's bass performance is highly dependent on the position of the headphones. So make sure you have a proper sit given the on-ear setup. The soundstage of both headphones are excellent. HD650 has a feeling you're listening in a sound room while t50p is more like in a concert hall.Comfort: Both headphones have their own merits. HD650 features a open design and is therefore more suitable for long listening sessions as your ears tend to get warm in closed headphone designs. However, t50p is much lighter than HD650 and the leatherette pads are actually more comfortable than HD650's velvet pads.Ease of use: t50p has and impedance of 32ohm versus HD650's 300ohm. Therefore it's much easier to drive from your portable devices. That being said HD650 was never designed to be portable so this is not a dock against the HD650Conclusion: HD650 is probably the more versatile headphone, which is great for a wider range of music and movies. t50p is more suited to vocals, jazz and classical music while HD650 has the edge in your thumping hip-hop, rock or pop. But given the size and design constraint of t50p, this is no small achievement!* VS Westone 4 (own)Sound: The sound signature in comparison with t50p is actually much closer than HD650. Both are leaning towards the neutral / clear side. The main difference is again in the soundstage, where Westone 4 has a smaller / closer image than t50p. I'd give a slight edge to t50p for better clarity though.Comfort: Since they're completely different designs, it boils down to whether you're comfortable with in-ear earbud designs. Suffice to say they're both very comfortable in their own rights.Ease of use: Both of them are easy to drive for portable devices. Of course Westone 4 is much more portable being an earbud. But the t50p doesn't take up a lot of space in your backpack either since the cans can be rotated 90 degrees and stay flat. Conclusion: The Westone 4 and t50p are my favorite portable headphones for mobile devices. I'd say t50p has a slight edge on the sound quality department but also a bit more inconvenient to carry than Westone 4. One thing to note is that Westone 4 is definitely the better airplane phone due to much better sound isolation. With t50p sound isolation is not sufficient for airplane rides.* VS Bowers & Wilkins P5 (demo)Sound: For those considering picking up the more expensive P5, I would definitely urge you take a serious look at t50p. I'd say the overall tonal clarity and stereo separation of the t50p are vastly superior to the P5, which is a shame since I'm a big fan of B&W's HiFi offerings. But don't be fooled by brand premium, I almost guarantee that you'll prefer the sound of t50p over P5 after a few minutes of Mozart.Comfort & Ease of use: I'd give them a tie since their designs are actually quite similarConclusion: For the price of P5, you can almost pick up 2 sets of t50p, while t50p provides, in my opinion, better sound. Enough said I guess :D* Final wordsThe construction of the t50p is simply amazing! The aluminum headband and can cover oozes luxury. The sound quality versus size ratio is simply off the chart. It stands shoulder to shoulder to the much larger and more expensive HD650, which itself is an excellent headphone. For those who worry about sound leakage, there's very little noticeable sound outside once the headphones have been PROPERLY sitted. Sound isolation is good but not enough for airplane rides. For those occasions, I'd recommend an in-ear headbuds like the Westone 4 instead. This is probably my smartest sound equipment purchase in recent years! I think you'll enjoy them as much as I do!

By L. C. Rafsky
Bassheads look elsewhere. But understand that several popular headphones and many portable devices artificially boost bass response because people "like it better". In reality, it's not what the artist intended, and is fatiguing over long listening periods. Why do some reviews call the sound of this headphone "lifelike and amazing" -- because it is. One reviewer here listens to a 5.5 Gen iPod (which has the wonderful Wolfson DAC), a Line-Out-Device (LOD) to bypass the iPod's crummy volume control, an outboard RSA amp built by the audio legend Ray Samuels of Chicago, using only lossless files ... the sound is jaw dropping (I have the same set-up). That's not the point - you are not going to use it that way. You are going to plug it directly in to a modern iPod or iPhone, and you will be blown away with the sound. After a few listens to your fave songs you will not miss the bass that's not really there anyway, and you will hear new things you have never heard before - startling. The glass breaking while Janis Joplin is singing Turtle Blues on Cheap Thrills - OMG the hair will stand up on the back of your neck. I'm an avid headphone enthusiast and have heard nearly every serious headphone at headphone meets (you didn't know there were such things, did you?) - I'm telling you these are worth every penny, and will change the way you hear music-on-the-go.

By Henri Savin
I am currently still searching for the best portable headphones. In that category, I have tried many. I have also liked many and so far, my best ones are the ATH-ESW9A. I will use these to compare to the Beyerdynamic T50p (Tesla technology). The T50p have received the EISA best product 2010-2011 award and are gorgeous looking. In order to compare effectively the two models, I will use my Iphone along with a FiiO E-11. The tracks I will use are those that I always use when trying to compare headphones, because I love them first but also because I know how they should sound and more importantly because they provide a good sample of music genres and tonalities. The tracks will be the following:- Ultrasone Sound test Siley Put short (Jazz, Binaural recording perfect for localization of sounds).- Ultrasone sound test Wellen track 7 (sound of water waves perfect for the head stage definition).- Frank Sinatra: How insensitive (Jazz, good also for localization of sounds).- Robin Thicke: Lost Without you (Perfect for the voice testing).- Pink Floyd: Astronomy Domine (Rock and excellent also for the localization of sounds).- DJ Magic Mike: Feel the Bass (Infra-Bass, enough said...) will be played from my computer because it is missing on the Iphone. But first, let's start with the non musical parts: Comfort: Both headphones are over the ears headphones. The ATH are slightly bigger and the T50p do require more care for the placement on the ears to deliver the best sound. Neither would be called very comfortable in a long while. I noticed some pain building when wearing glasses with the ATH.Conclusion: ATH : 0. T50p: 1.Price: I paid $209 for the ATH (MSRP $749.95) and $205.57 for the T50p (MSRP $329).I would never have paid the full MSRP price for the ATH because it is outrageous. I think the price I paid for both was quite fair in regard of the build quality. I was nonetheless very lucky to get the T50p at this low price. It is usually around $250.Conclusion: ATH : 1. T50p: 1.Packaging:The ATH comes with a faux leather bag and one adapter. The T50p comes with a nice nylon carrying pouch, an adapter and a small rubber cable holder (like a corkscrew). It is worth noticing that the build of both is absolutely stunning and their looks gorgeous. While the ATH is using high quality wood and leather, the T50p is build of metal. Both could be considered as luxury items. Conclusion: ATH : 0. T50p: 1.Sound Isolation:Both headsets are isolating fairly well but neither will provide a perfect isolation for a plane trip. In such case, nothing beats IEM with foam like the Shure E530.Both are still considered as portable headphones and can be used in reasonably loud environments. Conclusion: ATH : 1. T50p: 1.Now, let's come to the real important part of this test: the sound. I will start by saying that the sound for both was a bit disappointing out of the box but improved quite a lot with the burn-in time. This is especially true for the ATH as the T50p is still not matching my expectation. I have read on headphones forums that there is a question of Quality control with the T50p and I may have gotten a dud. It does not sound horrible but it is still lacking the clarity I did expect from a headphone of this price.I will finish this introduction by saying that I am partial to a large head stage and as natural a sound as possible. I like analytical headphones and my rating will be influenced by this factor.Ok, let's start :- Ultrasone Sound test Siley Put short (Jazz, Binaural recording perfect for localization of sounds). The ATH sounds clearer, with less emphasis on the bass but a slightly airier sound. As for the head stage, they both aren't as good as I would have wished.- Ultrasone sound test Wellen track 7 (sound of water waves perfect for the head stage definition). Both headphones are giving a nice sense of distance with this track. The water sounds are well restituted. The T50p sounds warmer and the ATH once again sounds clearer.- Frank Sinatra: How insensitive (Jazz, good also for localization of sounds). The ATH again sound a bit clearer although the voice seem closer on the T50p. The bass is boomier on the T50p. At the end, they both sound quite good but the T50p sounds too closed for my own taste. The voice is very well rendered.- Robin Thicke: Lost Without you (Perfect for the voice testing and bass punch). The T50p provides a very good voice and bass presence. When I switch to the ATH, I can immediately feel an airier delivery. The bass is also very good. On this track, the ATH is clearly winning because of the emphasis on the highs. This song points out very clearly the lack of highs for the T50p. As their reputation is to have excellent highs, this leads me to wonder if I got a (slightly) defective unit...- Pink Floyd: Astronomy Domine (Rock and excellent also for the localization of sounds).Starting with the ATH, the stereo rendition of this track is excellent. At the same level, I feel the need to lower the output slightly on the T50p. Once again, I do notice a drop of clarity in the sound. The mids are too pronounced.- DJ Magic Mike: Feel the Bass (Infra-Bass, enough said...) will be played from my computer because it is missing on the Iphone. The infra-bass is maybe the most difficult sound for any headphone to reproduce. I failed completely a Sennheiser 595 for its lack in reproducing it. In this case, both do work well, with or without amplification. I would give an edge to the T50p though. Conclusion:I really wanted to love these headphones. To start, I paid them 50$ cheaper than the price advertised the days before and after I bought them. I must have been lucky to jump on the 1 day price drop. Unfortunately, I either got a dud or these headphones are not meant for me. I will say their mids are too forward and their bass slightly boomier than I would have liked. All in all, they mostly lack clarity. Side by side, I definitely prefer the ATH.
