A tool, not a toy

Yes folks, this is a professional tool. Yes, you can use it for hobbies, like I am. But, this is by far the most rugged, sturdy, strong, effective, reliable and all-round excellent stapler I've used. But more importantly, this stapler allowed me to learn how to do (photographic fine art) canvas wraps, and do them WELL, in a very short time.This stapler is way more expensive than the rest of them, for one reason: it's a real tool. Like a good hammer, or an excellent set of new screwdrivers. It's a joy to hold, and a pleasure to work with. The features, from the trigger lock to the long cord to the recessed depth-setting dial, the staple loading, are clearly well thought out from years of improvements and harsh industrial use. Simply everything about this stapler is top notch.One week ago, I had not done any canvas-wraps...ever, not one. In two days I did my first two, with a spring-loaded stapler. That ended in disaster and required reprinting one of the prints. Then I used my hardware-store electric stapler, and remembered why I had long ago gone back to using the manual one...the $23 cheap electric one barely drove 1/4 of the staples home.So, a solution needed to be found, and quick....Christmas was approaching, and I had two dozen pictures that needed be printed, wrapped and shipped! I came to Amazon knowing they'd have something better, and got this one.BIG WORD OF ADVICE: unless you already have a source of these staples lined up, buy some when you get this stapler. They are NOT the normal hardware-store variety (T50 style). This stapler can use ONLY "Narrow Crown" staples, which are a mere 9/32" wide. They are the Arrow ET150 staples, item # 1506 (3/8", 10mm), #1508 (1/2", 12mm) and #1509 (9/16", 14mm). If you can find a local vendor, get a couple boxes of the three different lengths, and you'll be set for a long while. Otherwise, order them from Amazon. Honestly, here in Seattle there are business who sell nothing but staplers and nailers. How cool is that!After the stapler arrived (on time, in perfect condition), and I found a local source for the staples, it took only a few minutes to figure it out, since the manual doesn't say very much. Things you should know:Staple loading is totally easy. release the slide, and then turn the unit over and drop the staples into the channel, on the side where the smaller groove is. Slide it closed until it latches, and you're good to go. Clearing jams is equally easy, FAR easier than on any other stapler I've used. But remember: FIRST release the spring tension on the staples by releasing the slide. If you release the front-plate first, your staples will go sproing onto the floor. Anyway, release the hold-down, pull the front plate off, and there is simply no place for staples to hide! The Jam then clears easily, though it seemed a point grabbing tool might be needed. Put the plate back on and latch it down, then put the staples back in, and any jam is instantly cleared.Using the stapler is totally easy, and it's got the strength to really push those staples in! I've found two areas that cause the staples to not go in properly. First, operator error. That usually comes down to not holding the stapler with a consistent, moderately firm force against the piece, or for some reason not holding it exactly square. That can be fixed just by your technique, and you can usually tell because you SAW that you weren't holding the stapler right, or you felt it jump. It happens; nobody's perfect.The second reason staples sometimes don't seat is that there's a loose staple lodged in the tool head, effectively stealing much of the tool's force. If you thought you were holding the tool correctly, and you didn't feel it jump up from not enough you-pressing-down force, but the staple just didn't seat, and you almost had to pull the stapler off the staple...and the next staple does the same thing...it's time to stop, unload the staples and open the head to check. Every time it's happened to me that way, it's been a loose staple in there.You'll get consistently excellent results if you pay close attention to how firmly you hold the stapler to the work surface. Be consistent, and be firm. Not hard, but you don't want the stapler to push itself up from the work as it drives the staple. Once you get that part of it, only unusually hard spot in the wood will make the occasional staple not drive fully in.In the remainder of that week, I have now put together 19 canvases, and they are betting better and better. Perfect corners are now the norm. One thing I love about this stapler: that little nose where the staples come out. With that, you can get that stapler right next to where you're holding the canvas, even going between your fingers, with very little (not zero!) worry that you're going to get impaled by the staples.I'm not sure I understand why, and there's no memory of hearing anything different, but for the last several frames, I've been able to somehow "know" that the staples are nearly out with only one, and sometimes no staples left! Uncanny.Okay, that's enough. I really like this stapler. In the short time I've had it, I've driven probably 500 staples, with very few in any way bad. Indeed, the last picture I mounted had ZERO mis-driven, bent, or not-fully-seated staples. And no punch-throughs either! It was completely perfect.So, stop playing with those $20 toy staplers if you want your projects to come out RIGHT with zero frustration. This is the stapler to get! Just remember...if you don't often buy nice tools, this may very well be the first time you see a truly industrial-quality tool you can use at home. that can be the start of a very dangerous tool-acquisition hobby!If there was anything I'd change, it would be that given it's an intermittent-use thing, that cord isn't going to get warm...switch to something MUCH more flexible. They do, after all, make very flexible power cords these days...this tool could benefit from one.Thanks, Arrow, for a great TOOL, and not another toy.

Electric Staple Gun

I read tons and tons of reviews before I decided on this one. I am building a recording studio, and needed an easy way to attach high mass rubber sheeting to the walls. Most of the products that can drive staples of this size have bad performance reviews... from jamming to not driving the staple home. This stapler is a worthy investment. It does what it says it will do, and the thing WORKS. It is very easy, lightweight, and well made. Kudos!

Shoes really matter - but not for the reasons you think: Why Inov-8 gets it right.

Shoes really matter, but not for the reasons most weekend warriors think. For example, if you spend a lot of time looking for high cushioning and support, or if you buy shoes because a sales guy at the running store put you on a treadmill and video your feet to show you how a certain shoe "corrects" your stride, you might be caught off-guard by the Inov-8 approach.Here's why:During recent decades, running shoes have been designed to help initially prevent injuries in poorly conditioned legs and feet by building shoes that replace natural body functions with artificial stabilization and extra cushioning. The resulting problem is that the person using those shoes initially becomes more aerobically fit and starts running faster and longer... without their feet and legs being structurally strengthened to handle the increased demand. Before long, the shoes can't continue to compensate for the fact that the person's feet and legs' inner structures simply aren't trained to handle the running. It's too-much too-soon meets too-little too-late. Consequently, painful "overuse" injuries (shinsplints, knee pain, back pain, stress fractures, tendonitis, fasciitis, etc.) are practically an inevitability for many well-intentioned and dedicated aspiring runners who take up jogging or join a cross country or track team.A very large number of "overuse" injuries in otherwise healthy people result from a combination of two factors. 1) Weak/underused feet and leg structures, as described above; & 2) Bad running form - it doesn't immediately hurt to run improperly on 2" of cushioning, but bad form will catch up to you as you increase mileage. Really, the problem isn't "overuse" so much as "use" when, thanks to laziness and bad shoes, critical parts of our bodies are only conditioned to "under-use".The solution is to make the following transition: Stop running in shoes that put us on a cushy path to a painful destination and carefully learn to run in shoes that enable our bodies to run the way we were actually built to run. Most people are completely capable of much more running than you might think, but it takes a little work to correct years of under-use. This transition will require a little patience as you build the strength in your legs and feet to avoid injuries. It will also require learning to run with healthier running form, which is a lot easier on your body as well as more efficient for long distance.Inov-8 shoes are designed to enable your foot, not to support it to the extent of replacing natural foot functions. In other words, if you are out of shape and decide to start running 20+ miles per week exclusively in this shoe, you are taking a risk. The shoes are designed for the runner who is making or has already made the transition as described above. Inov-8's entire product line is built on a minimalist philosophy. More and more runners and fitness buffs are realizing that the Inov-8 approach is, indeed, a better approach. (Not to mention a darned good shoe in terms of materials and quality as well as design.)If you have not carefully transitioned to a minimalist running style and built up strong feet and legs for this type of shoe, a sudden switch could injure you. Take the transition slowly because your feet and legs need to get strong enough to actually do what they are built to do.Inov-8 shoes are generally comfortable, very well built, and perfectly able to carry a fit runner through many hundreds, and even a thousand, happy miles. However, they do not replace under-used arches or compensate for pounding, heel-striking strides. (Contrary to popular myth, flat-footed runners can run just fine in these shoes - if they get their feet and legs in shape. Flat feet are not the running liability many have been lead to believe. See the "comments" for more on flat feet.)How can I say all this? I have flat feet, terrible pronation, and am 6'3" tall. I ran four years of cross country in high school and was on the varsity squad for a state-championship team. The whole time, I fought miserable shinsplints, knee pain, and back pain. I popped Advil like tic-tacs. I loved the sport and ran relatively good 5K times but my chronic pain was bad enough to sideline me for all of track season senior year. Any time I increased my intensity or mileage, the problems got worse. Doctors were talking about "scar tissue" and "surgery". Well-meaning doctors told me to stop running. They said my body just wasn't made for it. Shoe-store employees continued to put me into higher support, more motion control, more cushioning to try and "correct" my feet and legs.It wasn't until college that a former teammate (who is now a professional runner partially sponsored by Inov-8) explained the concept of minimalist running to me. Although I was in good aerobic condition, I spent a month resting and then the better part of three months carefully re-training from scratch, patiently overhauling my form to be more efficient, working my way into exclusively running in racing flats (Inov-8 wasn't available yet), and allowing my feet and legs to get much stronger and more flexible.Since then, I run further and faster than ever before, with no more "overuse injury" bullcrap. My training mileage has at one point been greater than 90 miles per week. I have competed in a major marathon and placed in the top 4 in my age group. I have won a handful of smaller races. Better yet, I have not been injured or hurt ONCE since I made that transition to minimalist shoes and better running form. I haven't even owned a pair of traditional "trainer" shoes in over 8 years. (Much of my training is in an old pair of trashed racing flats with at least 1,500 miles on them. I prefer to use Inov-8 for more rugged terrain and tougher trails, where they excel, but they have models that make good trainers on almost any terrain. When my beloved racing flats finally die, I'll replace them with an Inov-8 racing model.)I consider myself a "weekend warrior" and I am a far cry from an "elite" runner. Had I listened to the well-meaning doctors who told me I just wasn't built to run and should give it up, I would have stopped years ago. Inov-8 understands that we humans are literally built to be running machines. Tap into it, and enjoy.

Inov-8 F-Lite 195

I am avid Crossfitter and have found these shoes to be the best while working out. They are minimalist, but still have enough of a sole for running and any other fast paced movement. Inov-8s have a perfect balance of lightweight, traction, and durability to them. These shoes breathe extremely well, very important while working out. Additionally, the liner fabric is comfortable enough with or without socks. I have put these shoes through paces and have still managed to remain in great condition. They feel light as a feather and they provide just enough protection from all the workouts I do. If you want to avoid cushioning, overblown support, and padding, these shoes are for you! Inov-8s are the next best thing to a "barefoot shoe". If you are looking for a shoe for lifting, running, rowing, and much more activity, then Inov-8s are for you.

Inov-8's for Weightlifting

I got these shoes to perform as lifting and all-around gym shoes. I went with these instead of a barefoot model because I had owned vibrams for almost 4 years for squatting & deadlifting, and I wanted something new.First Impressions:When I opened the box I was highly impressed with the look of the shoe. Even though I got the black & white model they still have a flashy & crisp look to them. Seeing them in person does them so much more justice. Upon closer inspection I was upset to see that the white along the soles was shoddily painted on. Being one for function I didn't dwell on it for too long, but if you're big into looks I can guarantee you some disappointment. It looks as if a third grader brushed the white on, and couldn't keep the brush inside the lines. That being said it's only really visible upon close inspection.The fit:Typically I wear an 11-12 size shoe depending on the brand. More of the minimalist/barefoot models put me closer to 11/11.5, so I purchased these in an 11.5 to be safe. My foot is slightly on the wide size, but I've never had a problem with standard width shoes. These were a different story, as the toe box is narrow, and the shoe comes to a point. This led to the length being perfect, but my last two toes rub along the side of the shoe despite it being the optimal length for my foot. Should I ever buy these again, I would definitely go with a wider fit. I found that taking out the 3mm padding in the sole allowed for a better feel, but my foot still spills over the sides. The feature I found great was the meta-flex. It allows for a more natural foot bend feel.The function:Like I said; I got these as gym shoes for lifting (though I'm not a crossfitter), so my opinion is based primarily on the shoes ability to support my feet under heavy loads. That was my first mistake. I began testing these shoes out with some air squats. They felt pretty good when driving my heels into the ground, but when I inspected them I saw that the crappy white paint job on the soles had some tension lines. I weigh about 185lb, so it worried me that the heel was giving under this pressure. If you're serious about your lifts you know incompressible soles are best for pushing something like a 3 plate squat. That was an instant turn-off. Running and walking is an entirely different story. The combination lightweight feel and meta-flex allow for very comfortable walking/runningOverall:I wouldn't recommend these for lifting, as not having a sturdy sole can lead to all sorts of problems. They are, however, one of the best running shoes to grace my feet, and I think they're a great shoe for someone transitioning to minimalist shoes; hence the "ok" rating. If you're a lifter, or crossfitter who's got a passion for oly lifts, then look elsewhere. I'll appease the crossfit population by acknowledging their great functionality for metcon's, but for your own safety it's better to lift in something more stable. I haven't tried inov-8's bare-xf 210, but they seem much better for lifting purposes. For those who want a shoe that will be there for you during heavy lifts invest in an actual weightlifting shoe, or a barefoot model. I'll be sticking to my vibrams/barefoot style shoes for deadlifts. As far as squats I'm going to stop being stubborn and spend the money on real weightlifting shoes.

Inov-8 X-Talon 190 Trail Shoes

I purchased these shoes for a 50-mile trail ultra in the mountains of Utah. I put 10 miles of break-in on these shoes before the race - normally something that would scare me for race day as I prefer to really know my gear and its limitations, but these performed not only "well", but they worked exceptionally.I do not recommend running on pavement or any hard surface for anything more than a few miles as the pressure points the rubber spikes create can really wreak havoc on your feet. Another thing to keep in mind is the sole is so thin that you can literally roll these shoes into a ball - even more so than any Nike Frees on the market - but that means that, if you're running on any surfaces with sharp rocks or scree, you *will* end up stabbing the soles of your feet at least a few times. The lower of the shoe is extremely grippy, which is great for keeping you on the trail.Outside of running surface warnings, these shoes perform beautifully straight out of the box. Inov-8 truly considers the extreme athlete when making their products. The outer is extremely breathable for hot weather and even breathes well after being doused in mud and water. Over my 50-mile ultra, I ran through muddy swamps, small creeks, dirt trails, rocky scree and pavement and the only thing I had to change was my socks - once.These shoes are so light, you hardly notice them on your feet. From now on, I will only wear Inov-8 shoes for any running I do in the future. Just keep in mind they are specifically built for certain terrain types. This shoe is made for extreme terrain where grip is necessary.

Inov8 X-Talon 190 performs great for Ultimate Frisbee

I tried out my X-Talons yesterday for a couple of hours playing ultimate frisbee and they rocked. They're light, grippy on the field, and feel natural on my feet.Light: they're under 7 ounces each and compared to my heavy Ladanian Tomlinson high-top Nike cleats, I feel like I've got Mercury's foot wings on when I run.Grippy: the word "grippy" is made-up, but it describes how the shoe behaves over dry dirt patches and grass on the field.Natural: I can feel the divots and clumps of dirt/grass under my feet, but not to the point where I'm distracted. I've played barefoot before, and that feels good, but this is cool because I get the protection in case I step on a bee or sharp pebble or something.I bought these shoes a size larger than what I normally wear so I don't slam my toes on the front edge during sudden stops or jukes. I recommend everyone do the same or at least get them at half-a-size larger.Not sure what the mesh is made of, it feels like super tough paper or cardboard, and that doesn't sound impressive, but it looks super durable. I'll try to come back on here and say how long this pair lasted. (Marking today's date: Jan 08, 2012)I give it a big thumbs up - 5 stars!

Great Trailrunning and "Mudding" Footwear!

I bought this shoe in preparation for a 5k obstacle mud run, Rugged Maniac to be specific. These performed remarkably and allowed me to push through a few obstacles that would have been very difficult in "conventional" shoes.I've tried all types of shoes. Conventional shoes were starting to give me shin splints and knee cramps, this caused me to start looking at the "toe shoes". The thin sole and 0-degre rise in the the heel has served me quite well with running, daily walking, and strength training. The downside with the toe shoes was their inherent vulnerability to my feet while trail running amongst sharp rocks and hidden roots.Which leads me to the Inov-8 shoes. Getting prepared for the mud run, I needed to do a lot of trail running, hitting a lot of hills and getting exposed to wet/muddy conditions. These shoes provide a wonderfully balanced platform while running and dig firmly into the ground. They are very light, flexible, yet decently resilient. I say decently resilient due to the black tip of the shoe at the toe becoming partially detached from the shoe after my mud run. Easily repaired with some super glue, but an issue nonetheless.Aside from that, they truly helped me to conquer the obstacle....especially since it was built on the a ski slope! It handled very well in hard and soft dirt, deep mud pits, water, rocks, rope, and wood boards. Never lost grip, the mud never clogged and created a slick bottom of the shoe, didn't get weighed down with water or mud.Cleaning is very simple, wash in warm/hot water in a utility sink or tub with mild soap, rinse with cold water, and let stand to dry under a fan or room heater. These fold and roll very easily which makes ringing out the water very simple. I would gladly get another pair of Inov-8's for training and competitive purposes. :-) I would truly give this a 4.5/5 stars, but 4/5 is good considering the reliability issue.

Amazing bang for the buck! A Hidden Gem for sure!

The popularity and availability of Soundcraft products hasn't quite hit this side of the pond from where they are made and much more popular in the UK. I'm glad a friend of mine turned me on them as they are an amazing top quality mixing board with great logical design, input and ouput options and great onboard effects.I A/B'd them verses Mackie, Yamaha, and others and the Soundcraft blew them away with features and I/O options that the others only had in their much more expensive lines. The Lexicon effects are top notch as expected and even though there are a lot, you and I both know that reverb is probably the only one you'll ever use and the reverb built-in is very good and has the ability to be adjusted not just some preset. The EQ options, submixes also are head and shoulders above the others in this price range.I originally was looking at the 8 channel version because I often play in either a duo or a 4 piece band but I'm glad I paid a little extra and got the 12 channel. I'd much rather be faced with a few extra channels rather than dealing with compromises of how to rig up a band with too few channels. Little submixers for drums etc just add to the over all noise of your signal chain so better to eliminate them all together. I also have the ability to run things in stereo that I couldn't before because of a lack of channels ie my guitar rig.You won't find these at the box stores so you'll need to buy this on faith but believe me you'll be the envy of your musician friends and excited to write a view like I am. Worst case Amazon is very good on their return policy, but I'll doubt that would even come up.

What a wonderful little board

I've done a lot of research looking for a small board that I could eventually rack mount and that would be used for a variety of purposes; mainly for in ear monitoring for my band and for occasional acoustic gigs or any small gig where I wouldn't have to mic up a whole band. I had never owned a Soundcraft product, but a lot of the working sound guys on our circuit swear by them and our primary sound guy owns a large model.I received the board and quickly realized how incredibly solid, versatile and clean it is. As an in ear monitor board, I use the two aux sends and the one effects send for three mono mixes and use the main mix for my monitor mix in stereo. I'm using very high end Shure 535 three way in ear monitors and what they revealed was the incredible audio quality of this board. And I'm running each of the channel EQs basically flat! I'm also running a Shure Beta87 vocal mic, and the mic preamps on this board do it every bit of justice. I've also experimented with the effects as you can't use the effects send for a monitor mix AND have control over effects in each mix. The processor is the same classic Lexicon high quality that I've grown attached to over the years.Finding the rack mount ears proved to be a bit of a challenge, but you can find them. The model number is specified in this board's user manual and is a special order item from most sellers. I received mine from another vendor in a couple of weeks time, and the board is now solidly mounted in a Gator rolling rack case.If this board has the number of inputs you need and the other features you are after, then worry not about receiving a very high quality piece of gear. I simply love this little board. It has exceeded my expectations in every way.

I am now a believer in robotic vacuums!

For months, no years, my wife has been asking for a robotic vacuum. She does most of the house work and I do most of the fixing. I have followed the progress of the Roomba and decided to have another in depth look at the reviews and how it performed to date. What follows is NOT a Roomba/Neato comparison. I have never owned a Roomba nor do I think I ever will, but who knows. I purchased a Neato Robotics XV-11 about four weeks ago. What follows is a detailed look at what the Neato XV-11 is and how it performs. I will try to be as objective as possible and share my journey of how I decided which robot vacuum to buy.First, a bit about me. I am an avid Amazon buyer and use them heavily for both personal and work related purchases. They are simply the best at the online experience and I typically only purchase items that they ship. They have the best pricing on a regular basis and ship promptly with a great online experience. I have only had two issues with Amazon and they recovered nicely. I am a former network and systems engineer in the field of technology. I am now a science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) teacher and a coach. I have coached sports, but mostly coach middle school and high school robotics team. Suffice it to say, I do my research on techie stuff and push the envelope in robotics.The environment: a family of four (two boys) and a yellow lab (2yrs). I will leave the bird and rat out of it...no...I won't actually. They get rat nest and bird seed all over so they are included too. We live in a single floor house of about 2k sq ft. The floor is a combination of wall to wall carpet, tile, hard wood floor and rugs on top of the hard wood floor. There are a myriad of transitions for the Neato to traverse between tile and hard floor, between rugs and the hard wood floor. We also have floor to ceiling windows with no trim at the bottom of the window. We also have some furniture that inclines backward to the ground. Meaning the opening in the front is higher than at the back.After researching the Roomba I looked at what else was available. I could not get over that you have to clean the Roomba vacuum brushes a lot, especially for those with dogs. I also could not get over 50 minutes to vacuum a room of say 12X12. The Neato had some complainers about its performance, but I was the head of a Quality Assurance department in a past career and know you get some people that want the world and complain if they do not get it. While I do not think the public should beta test, that is the reality people. Lots of beta testing can happen and does happen prior to a product shipping, but until you have experienced a product build cycle you will never understand that all testing cannot be done to exacting standards. Especially with a new company with limited resources. If you don't believe me, look at Apple and the iPhone 4 antenna. I digress. I took a leap at the Neato due to its intelligent mapping system and the fact that Amazon has a great return policy.Here is what I found:1. The neato cleans my 16X12 den in 11 minutes on average. It is wall to wall carpet and full of obstacles and dog hair. I empty the easy to remove from the top dust bin. It did say on two of the cleanings that its brush was stuck and I disassembled the brush on the bottom. Basically it is like a regular vacuum brush, but has squeegee like brushes so no hair gets into a "brush." It turns out that it was in fact not tangled with something in its brush. My dog and sons playing had broken two loops of carpet and the Neato had found them and tried to vacuum them. one end of the loop was still attached. Now I know to look out for these and not take the brush off when it happens. The brush is easy to take off and put back on.2. I can push the big green button and off it goes...to clean the entire house. It comes back and recharges as necessary and then goes back to where it was working and finishes. I have noticed it does not always restart exactly where it was, but it does get all areas at least once and often twice. Just now it returned to base, bumped into something, but got around it and is charging.3. Not much to maintain. I think we will be replacing the filter and I imagine the belt for the brush eventually, but it pretty much just gets emptied by us. We are not doing the scheduled cleaning as the house needs to get picked up by teenagers first and that requires some whip cracking on my part.4. My wife loves it. In the beginning she followed it around and would report back frequently on where it was and how it was doing. "This is the best birthday present I have ever gotten!" If we could just figure out how to get it emptied automatically. A docking station with a vacuum that sucks the Neato dust bin dry would be cool. Come on Neato troops...you can do this!5. It traverses the carpets, throw rugs, various transistions perfectly. I put the magnetic strip down around the problem couch with underside that slopes to the floor. It actually went under one piece of furniture and disappeared vacuuming...only to emerge a minute or two later.One thing to consider is where to park it. While you could bring it out only when you need it and place it in a room and then hit the green button (this will clean that room only and then return to where it started) that does not use it to its full potential. To use its full potential you need to put the little base station next to a wall somewhere in the house so it can travel back and charge up etc.After four weeks, we love our Neato and have no regrets. I will check in again six months from now and update. I am also going to update a little video.UPDATE:One week after this review the Neato started making a strange noise. Kind of like a grinding roar. Very loud. We called support and they said they would send out a new Neato at no charge. They did ask for a credit card to go on file in case we didn't return the original. Access to support was very quick and the new Neato arrived in two days. We actually continued to use the original Neato which, aside from the noise, did a good job. The Neato arrived and we did not miss a beat. I can only speculate what the problem was. We are now on month three of our experience with robot vacuuming and our Neato is awesome!Update 8/15/2011:Time for another update. Unfortunately, I do not have more to say other than the Neato has passed the test of time! We continue to use the Neato in this fashion:1. Pickup stuff on floor (no robot for that yet).2. Double check magnetic strip under our couch that inclines to floor. It sometimes gets bumped by humans. This strip prevents the Neato from going into what I call a furniture wedge where the sofa bottom slopes to the floor.3. Double check that the Neato dustbin was emptied after last time.4. Open doors to rooms that I want cleaned in entire house (our house is one level). Neato will find the doorway, finish the room it is in, go back to the doorway and enter the room to clean it. Multiple doorways? Not a problem, Neato will clean each one and go back to recharge if necessary.5. Press the big button to turn on.6. Press the big button to start cleaning house.7. Go away or continue to be in house and be careful not to walk on robot.8. Neato finishes and returns to base and I empty dustbin.A commenter recently asked about cleaning the brush. Another commenter already responded and I will add that I have only had to dig thread and hair out of the brush twice in about 100 operations. Keep in mind that each time I run the Neato it is usually cleaning about 1500 square feet of house.At one point, I was going to connect the Neato to the Internet to see if there was an update. Do I really want to? Not sure. Why would I fix something that works great already? Maybe I will take a look at their website.Go Neato!Update 4/11/2012Neato died. Or, started making noises that were not Neatoish and we humans got concerned. It was scary, thinking of life without Neato. My wife called Neato central support and described what was happening to our Neato. I apologize for sounding so corny, but the whole crisis started out feeling so Orwellian. Neato support responded with a new Neato on its way. Almost as if the little robot was phoning home or being watched by a rescue squad.This is now our third Neato and I am happy to report that robots do in fact evolve. We have the latest firmware and Neato continues to zig and zag through our busy lives vacuuming up all kinds of crud. We have gotten lax with our pickups lately and the little cleaning bot does not care. It will bump around shoes, push electrical cords out of the way (this I may have to video, can't figure out why it does not get tangled), dodge yellow labs, and take ownership of a room. I actually hate it on when I am home, my wife tends to put it to work regardless.The third bot was a refurb and free of charge. We ended up with a new brush (more like a rubber rotating squigee). I figure a brush is good for at least 350-400 cleaning sessions of about 1500 sqft. Maybe more. After pressing for the proverbial "why?" our Neato had a close encounter with death. I was told some had a gear not quite right.I have built my share of bots and the fact that such a device, with so many moving parts, can last many times longer than your average $150 upright simply amazes me. Not to mention that you don't do the pushing.Neato, and the support team, are our vacuum heroes!1/27/2013Sad news on the vacuuming front. A vacuum has passed away. Our upright! Our Neato continues to vacuum automagically! Our upright is still needed for occasional deeper cleanings, especially in furniture, corners etc. The Neato is great, but we still need an upright. In my quest for a new upright I looked high and low. I am sick of paying lots of money, but also sick of buying a new vacuum every 2-4years. How hard can it be right? And what of these pricey vacuums from Electrolux, Miele, etc. etc.?? Suffice it to say, I decided to go past the $200 price point and see if these pricey machines really do last five times longer and do ten times the job. Very efficient & effective robot

I really like this robotic vacuum. It cleans a ridiculous amount of pet hair and dust from my carpet! I used a Roomba, which was fairly good but the drawback was it couldn't navigate to other rooms and back as well as the Neato does. The other drawback was it couldn't figure out how to get onto area carpets without the spinning brush on the front getting stuck. For the Neato, this is no problem at all. Instead of bouncing all around looking for light houses it will detect doorways and move from room to room in a more logical fashion.The suction and cleaning ability is amazing. I would place the suction power closer to an actual upright vacuum. The noise level is a bit quieter than an upright and maybe a little louder than the whine of a Roomba. There is significantly less bumping, which overall, makes the Neato quieter. It still bumps into things (mostly table legs) from time to time but nowhere near as hard or as frequent.Battery life is adequate. About an hour to 90 minutes I've seen. I have several large rooms for it to work on and it doesn't do them both in a single charge. The nice thing about the Neato is it will recharge itself (2-3 hours) when the battery runs out then it will resume exactly where it left off to complete the job.Coverage is very good. It does seem to miss very small parts of the room but nothing major. I have debris from a litter box for it to clean up and it does get nearly every single scrap that comes out. I have it scheduled to run nightly and it picks up way more dust and fur than the Roomba.If you don't want the Neato to go somewhere your only choice is to close the door or place down a black magnetic strip. Very ugly compared to Roomba's lighthouse solution.Another thing to mention is there is no option for it to clean a small area. It has to do the entire job.I've taken a star off because the customer service is HORRIBLE. Mine was broken from day one due to a known defect (the battery is buzzing and not charging when connecting to the dock). I spent FIVE days and FIVE CALLS on the phone with customer support and it got me NOWHERE. First they said they'd give me a next day shipping label which sounded reasonable. That never came. After more and more calls getting nowhere they then wanted me to ship it ground and CHARGE MY CREDIT CARD AGAIN FOR ANOTHER ROBOT??? Again, I still don't know if I would ever get a shipping label. Truly frustrating.

Neato is better than Roomba - I have had 6 different Roombas so I know

I have had the Neato vacuum robot for a few weeks now and I am just now getting the time to write a review. I don't write reviews for everything I buy just the things I think people need to be warned about or things I think people should really buy.Compared to RoombasI have owned 6 different Roombas starting with the original red one. The thing about Roombas is they don't really know where they are or where they are going they just start going and when they come to a wall or furniture they change course. They travel in a pattern that is designed to cover the whole room but is some cases where there is an odd shaped room or furniture in the room they can end up going around in the same spot and not covering all areas evenly. Also the pattern that is left on the carpet looks like someone gave a monkey a vacuum and let it loose as there are lines going everywhere. Roombas don't always get all the rooms in the house either and if they do get into a remote area of the house they often don't find their way back to their charging base and you have to play hide and seek with them and start looking under beds and furniture to find where your Roomba died. In my case this happened about half of the time.Neato -The GoodThe Neato is different with its laser eyes it looks at its surroundings and plots a course and cleans in straight lines and covers all rooms completely. My house is large enough that the Neato is not able to clean the whole house in 1 charge but it returns to its base and charges up and then finds its way back to where it left off and finishes the job. It has a stronger vacuum and has picked up more dirt than the Roomba did. I find the dirt bin to be easier to empty and holds more dirt. When I first got my Neato I scheduled it to run everyday. The first week the dirt bin was packed full and backed up into the brushes. I even emptied it between on its break when it was recharging to clean the whole house. Since then I haven't had to empty it on its break and it is not even completely full when it is done but it still finds dirt. I am not sure where since everything seems to be spotless now but the dirt is still out there somewhere. The Neato also only uses a rubber type brush like the one that is on the roomba and it doesn't have a bristled brush like the Roomba has but I like this feature as I spent way too much time cleaning hair and carpet out of the Roomba brush. The Neato still picks up my cats hair with its powerful suction.Neato - The BadI think the Neato creates a map of the room and then stores this map and references it to navigate around so any changes to its orientation is not handled well. Let me explain. When the Neato first starts up it does a little dance looking left and right and you hear a whirling sound. This is the laser spinning around on top of the Neato. I think it is creating a map when this happens and it knows where it is on this map and moves accordingly. If you pick up the Neato and put it back down and it is facing a different direction then its reference to itself on the map has changed and totally freaks the Neato out and it starts to cry for help says it is unable to navigate or something like that. The only solution I have found is to hold the big button down until it powers off and then start it back up again. This clears its map and allows it to create another one. The down size is if it had already cleaned half the house it doesn't know that it did anymore and will start all over. I had this happen when I emptied out its bin a couple times as well so it seems very sensitive to orientation changes so don't touch it when it is cleaning just let it do its thing. If you don't touch it this rarely happens. That is really the only bad thing that I have found with the Neato and it is not so bad that I don't like it I just can't give it 5 stars because it is not perfect.Overall the Neato is a great vacuum robot and does a good job at cleaning my house and I would recommend it to anyone.

Fantastic mixer!

I love this mixer. It is very compact but yet has so many features/channels for it's small footprint. I did a lot of research before buying this and I really couldn't find another mixer that comes close to it in value. There are not many 12 - channel mixers with twelve XLR inputs! Soundcraft has been around for a long time and they know how to build quality gear. The metal case on this mixer is very sturdy. The mic preamps are very quiet, at least until you get up to 3/4 turn. You generally don't need more gain than this. The EQ is very musical with the mid sweep control. Effects are very good. You have the option of two monitor sends if you aren't using effects. However, for a mixer this size you generally wouldn't need more than one send. This is only meant to mix a small bar band, etc., so you aren't going to be running a lot of monitors anyways. Best part is that all of your controls and plugins are on top. Very user friendly. In my opinion, this is an excellent product. Read the feature list to see if it meets your needs and I don't think that you'll be disappointed.

We purchased this to use in our church. It is very user-friendly and compact even with all the inputs. We have not used the lexicon effects and probably won't, but we have enjoyed being able to hook everything up and still have room to grow.

Product Description

Soundcraft have unveiled another addition to the rapidly growing new Soundcraft family, the multi-format low-cost EPM mixers. The emphasis with the Soundcraft EPM 8+2 is very firmly on quality build and audio performance, with an easy to understand control surface uncluttered by unnecessary facilities, and Soundcraft have brought new technologies and ideas to this very cost-effective range. Surface mount technology is used throughout, using close-tolerance components for high accuracy and repeatable settings for EQ and gain controls. The highly-transparent GB30 Mic amp (designed by Graham Blyth for the company’s 30th anniversary, and also used on the larger LX7ii and GB Series consoles) features high-resolution adjustment over a wide gain range of 55dB, and provides a stunning +22dB headroom through the console. True professional 48-volt phantom power caters for condenser microphones of all types. A unique feature of the signal monitoring is the PEAK led. This uses multipoint signal take-offs to watch for overload in several parts of the channel strip, and the led lights more brightly as the signal approaches the peak point. For smooth and accurate channel control, the EPM has 60mm high quality faders as used on other Soundcraft desks. The monitor output and headphone output work in parallel so that performers can still listen on phones while an engineer is listening on studio monitors. Further features of the EPM series include 2 configurable auxiliary buses; XLR-type and ¼” metal jack connector sockets; RCA phono stereo playback inputs and record outputs; 3-band EQ with a swept mid on mono inputs; 2-band EQ on stereo inputs; TRS insert sockets and inserts on all mono inputs and mix output; Ten-segment LED output metering; Intuitive and comprehensive solo system; Headphone output; Easily rack mountable. Great mixer

I've used this mixer with students for several years and it has stood up to lots of use. My only gripe is that it doesn't have an off switch so I gets left on all the time. Other than that it is a great product that I would buy again!

Great value for drummer mikes

I use this mixer to preamp the drums and drummer's headset microphone. It has the capability to handle both very well. Other preamps I have used could either handle the instruments or the headset, but not both. This has been, and continues to be, a real Godsend for our church band.

great board, no power button annoying

For a no-nonsense mixer you can't go wrong with the Soundcraft. It is very well constructed and delivers clean EQ (no onboard FX on this one) so it essentially works as advertised. It's great for someone who prefers to insert external FX. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it has no power button. You have to unplug it or have it connected to a power strip to power it on and off. I use it as a mixer in my rehearsal studio so it's annoying.
