By alexanderaku
One thing I had a lack of was metric sockets in my tools. Of course, many years back (60s to early 80s) I never needed metric tools but on rare occasions. Today, you'll find most things are metric instead of SAE.My new LA-400R Montezuma tool box had one rack that looked curiously empty until I purchased this set to fill its deep-well metric socket holders for 1/2" drive. Almost as quickly as I received these, I put them in the new box - and to use. First use? I had a 1986 Monte Carlo SS I wanted to remove the frame from. Using this set and my old 1/2" drive Ingersoll Rand "231" impact, I had the body completely off the frame and the gas tank removed in less than an hour - and I'm an old guy in his late 50's who hasn't done much mechanic work in many years. At this great price, this Sunex set was in my hands in three days after ordering from ToolTopia, and it sure made this first job a breeze using only one socket tool rack and a bare minimum handful of other tools!I had been putting off pulling that frame until I had the proper metric tools. The "why I wanted it" is for a customized 1955 2-dr Buick Special I own. That SS Monte's rear suspension and rear axle will soon become the new upgrade for the original Buick chassis rear-end - for better braking, acceleration, and probably a much better ride.Back to the tools, Sunex has also provided a nice blow-molded case with FOUR retaining snaps for very secure storage - that also holds the individual sockets tightly in their respective positions inside the case. I didn't need the case, but it is worth mentioning how good and solid the case is. The only metric socket not provided in the listed range of 10mm-36mm is a 31mm socket, but I have it in another socket set in 3/4" drive - so it's doubtful that will ever cause a problem. The SAE 1 1/4" socket is also an equivalent (31.75mm) fit for a 31mm nut or bolt head. Sunex does have the individual 31mm socket in a 6-point (model number 231MD). The 12-point design here also makes the socket go onto the fitting a little easier than 6-points. But remember, there is a reason you need both Metric and SAE tools and most often 6 or 12 point sockets - unless you don't care what gets damaged, marred, or destroyed.Compared to my SnapOn Tools deep well impact sockets, I like the design of the Sunex throats better. Less metal in the throat area allows fasteners to slide in deeper into the socket during removal and installation, and the sockets are of the same materials and wall thickness that my older SnapOn SAE 12-points have. Better yet, Sunex has a lifetime warranty - SnapOn offers none, and I don't even want to mention the difference in price here.
