fantastic sound

great sound, love the look, keep this one in the kitchen and am thinking of getting another one for my bathroom so I can listen while I get ready for work. This was a fantastic investment.

Looks better than it works

The simplistic, but handsome, design of the Tivoli Audio Model One AM/FM table radio caught my eyes when I was researching for an am/fm radio. After reading the better than average reviews, I decided to give it a try.I live in Sacramento, about 15 miles from the nearest radio/television towers. I wanted a radio with good AM reception - like the AM reception from my car - to listen to the variety of talk-radio stations, particularly my favorite station in San Francisco. To my disappointment, the reception from the Tivoli was no better than my less expensive radios: The AM reception was poor for many of the channels, except for those local stations with the strongest signals. (Why is it that Spanish channels generally come in strong and clear?) The station from SF came in weak, and with too much static. The FM reception was good across most of the spectrum, but not spectacular. The reception of the local NPR stations were strong and clear, as judged by some symphonic music. However, for stations with weaker signals the radio was not capable of pulling in them in for enjoyable listening.I understand the performance of a radio depends, to a large extent, on variability of radio signals, which can be affected by the radio's surroundings. I can only judge this Tivoli radio based on my experience, and my opinions may not be shared by others. Therefore, evaluating the Tivoli Model One, I give the AM performance a C-minus and a B for its FM, with an overall C-rating. In part, my evaluation is also based on cost - value vs. performance. At a cost of over $175, perhaps I expected more from this radio.
