5Rheem RT9 Review
By videooo
I was tired of hasteling my 4-gallon hot water heater in my forty foot RV, I mean 4-gallons of warm water makes for a real short shower especially when the winter ground water temperature that's replacing the hot water used from the tank is a freezing 40 degrees cooooold. So I decided to go with an on demand tankless hot water heater and Rheems RTE9 40-amp breaker 3-gpm hot water heater fit my needs to a Tee.Excellent Rapid delivery, over the phone they said three to five weeks, oh-well - the RTE9 arrived in five working days, perfect.Installation, it took two to two and a-half hours to install. It took longer to drive to Lowe's and collect and buy the parts than it did to install the Rheem RTE9.The Rheem RTE9 was quick and easy to install.I screwed the RTE9 and an electrical junction box to the wall.I plumbed the RTE9 into my RV's water lines with PTC (push to connect-connector pipe fittings) quick and easy.I flipped-off the main breaker, then ran ten feet of 8-gauge wire between the circuit breaker panel and the RTE9.I tied the RTE9 to the 8 gauge wire in the junction box with wire-nuts and connected the 8 gauge wire to the 240v 40-amp breaker, then I snapped the breaker into the service panel.I opened the hot water faucets, turned the RTE9's valve on, turned the master RV water shut-off valve on, to purged and prime the RTE9, once they system was loaded/primed I closed the faucets.I flipped-on the main breaker, then switched-on the RTE9's breaker, the green light came on the RTE9 - and when I opened the hot water kitchen and the bathroom shower faucets again, which are both ten feet away from the RTE9, the red lights came on the RTE9 - and endless hot water came flow'n out of the faucets. What a breeze! What a Great Hot Water Heater! I highly recommend it for your home, RV or Boat ) provided you have a minimum 50-amp service.

5Great tankless water heater
By Mike T
I switched from a 60 gallon natural gas water heater to the Rheem RTE 9 electric tankless water heater. I was worried about it's ability to provide hot water for a family of 5 but so far I am very happy. The response time for hot water is great, much faster than it was with the gas water heater. With the gas water heater it would take at least 30 seconds for the water to start feeling warm. With the Rheem water heater you start feeling the water warming up in 10 to 15 seconds and it's hot within 20 seconds. As for showers and baths we have had no problems so far. Part of this might be due to our use of water saving shower heads and faucets the allow between 1 gallon per minute (gpm) to 1.5 gpm. The Rheem water heater is rated at 3 gpm and it's rare that someone is using more than one sink and the shower at the same time. For less than $200.00, you really can't go wrong with the Rheem electric water heater. It probably took me as long to install the Rheem water heater as it took me to install a conventional gas or electric tank water heater. Now I have to wait and see what the difference will be from the gas bill to the electric bill but I'm guessing it will be less just for the fact that the Rheem water heater only runs when there is a demand for hot water while the gas tank heater was constantly keeping 60 gallons of water hot 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

2Rated at 3 GPM but...
By MedicPat
I purchased this Rheem RTE 9 to be used as a point of use water heater in my new bathroom in my "man cave". I also wanted to run hot water to a hose bib where I could use it for washing the dog, putting hot water in a 5 gal bucket, etc.Don't be deceived by the 3 GPM rating. According to the "Use & Care Manual, with Installation Instructions for the Installer" provided with the unit you can only expect a 30 deg F rise in water temp at 3 GPM. My inlet water temp this time of year (January) is 48 Deg F. At 1.5 GPM I was only getting a 40 Deg F rise in temp. Yup, at half the rated flow I had 240 volts at 40 amps via two 40 amp breakers going in and only 98 deg F water out of the tap! Figured there must be something wrong. After reading the chart this is exactly what is to be expected.I started to send it back then started figuring the costs. I spent $166 on this unit, $70 on 30 feet of 8 gauge 2 conductor wire, $8 on a double pole 40 amp breaker, and $65 on miscellaneous conduit, junction boxes, connecters, etc. Just over $300 to install this unit. I can get $166 of this back if I send it back and purchase a different/larger heater with better performance. But, all the lager units require more amps (larger wire, would have to replace all the new plumbing, wiring and breakers I just installed). So I decided to purchase another RTE 9 and hook them up in series (98 deg water out of first unit connects to cold water inlet of second unit) now I have 130 deg water at the tap. This is where I wanted to be but not how I wanted to get there. All in all I received three of these units. The second one I ordered was defective so a third was sent to replace the second. This unit is nice and small but it's ability to heat water also seems small. If your water inlet temp in the 60 - 70 deg F range and you only need 1.5 GPM of hot water it may work great for you.I've added a couple of images from the box to help you decide if this unit would work for you.Update: 4-12-2013It's been 3 months since I installed both units. The unit that was sent to replace the defective unit only works about 85% of the time. When it's not working I have to stop the water flow, shut the power off at the breaker and then turn the power back on get it to work. I have tested the breakers and it's not a power supply issue. The problem is definitely in the water heater. All in all, if I had it to do over again, I would have gone with a different water heater.
