I actually bought these for a shooting buddy who doesn't mind spending the money when he knows he's buying the best. I've had a pair of the original style Pro Ears for the past seven years. I use them constantly as I shoot twice a week at our gun club. My loads range from .44 Mag down to .22 LR and everything in between. Since renovating the safety features of the club, the sound pressure levels increased as more safety walls went up. My phones are not in the least pampered and only require the occasional battery change. I did buy the replacement kit for the earcups (now changed to more comfortable leather & how they now ship- used to be vinyl) and the little round microphone wind socks. The great thing with these-besides the noise attenuation- is that you can adjust the frequency cut-off or accentuation by the internal jumpers under the foam liners. A 2 minute procedure with tweezers and great if you're older and losing some high frequencies. You can also 'boost' ambient sounds if you wear them hunting; they're like binoculars for your ears... And if one side should fail you're not SOL for the day...there are no wires connecting one side to the other. They contain TWO separate discrete circuits that do not depend on each other. So, if one side should die (not likely) you still have the other side operational. I believe these newer ones may also have an auto-off feature if you put them away w/o turning them off first. They are also about 25% slimmer than the 'classic' design so you have less bulk when shouldering a rifle up to your cheek. The noise reduction of 28 is pretty high also but the great thing is how the circuitry works. On cheap electronic phones, a loud sound will shut down the microphones and then they will gradually recover- with the volume noticeably increasing. The Pro Ears are the only electronic phone i've used (and i've tried several cheap ones) where the volume does not seem to fluctuate up and down. The 'attack' and 'recovery' time is pretty instantaneous and unnoticeable. You don't realise this unless you've used Pro Ears then go to cheapies. You WILL NOT be happy with anything else.My advice: If you're a serious shooter, buy these- don't screw around trying to save some money, it's false economy and you won't desire a different pair after wearing them for a week then trying your buddy's new set at the range then looking with disgust at the crap you're using and settled for; trying to rationalize saving them for the ride-on mower.Oh, and they include a set of cables so you can plug in your iPod if you like to listen to Mozart behind a .22 or Satanic Slay Death Metal with your S&W .460 or AR15.
