By J. Elliott
I have been wearing New Balance shoes for many years, because they have decent selection and are available in widths. However, not many people realize that New Balance shoes are made on a number of different 'lasts' (forms) to perform specific functions, and that the type of shoe will also make a difference. The 'last' type will determine the heel width, instep height, toe box depth, and forefoot width. The type of shoe (running, X training, walking, etc) will determine things like lacing pattern, side support, height of heel relative to the rest of the shoe, etc.I have learned over the years that a running shoe will not be as comfortable for me as a cross trainer, adding some stress to my knee when walking. I also learned that a standard, generic last will work, but not as comfortably or with as much support as other more specialized lasts. From experience I know that a New Balance RL3 lasted shoe fits most comfortably on my foot - a shoe that has a heel more narrow than standard, but standard dimensions in the other 3 areas. I have owned a number of other models of NB shoes in the RL3 last, and always use the new balance website search box to have the current model shoes in this last display before I go looking for shoes. NB shows lasts for a considerable selection of foot shape variations, and looking at the NB last chart will help in selecting a shoe. This 871 cross training shoe, I am happy to say, fits exactly the same as my other 2 models of older NB cross training shoes that use the same RL3 last, and in the exact same size and width. None of the size variation or tight fit that others have noted. Maybe the other reviewer's previous NB shoes were of a different last?My only complaint is that I only ordered one pair of these these a week ago - user comments on the shoes being too narrow/tight made me cautious on buying 2 pair. Discovering that they are the exact fit as my older ones, I tried to order the second pair I originally planned on buying. BUT, in a week the shoes have gone up $25 for my size! Oh well, hope they come back down.

I bought these for my son for training and conditioning and he loves them. I noticed a lot of people complaining about the shoe being snug, but I'm wondering if they did not notice that these shoes come in width sizes as well. My Son has a wide foot so I purchased a wide width in 10 and they fit perfectly for his wide foot. New balance is one of the few shoe makers that still provides shoes in various width sizes. I might just have to pick me up a pair, very light shoe.
