The open top, combat-style Scout is rough side out to provide additional stability. This design also provides a smooth leather holster pocket for a faster, smoother feel on the draw. The Scout carries the handgun in a vertical orientation, with no cant or angle, so it can be used strong side, crossdraw, or in front of the hip (appendix carry). Additional features include stitched leather sight rails and a Generation II injection-molded nylon J-hook that secures onto the belt. Constructed of premium saddle leather, the Scout fits belts up to 1 1/2". Made for semiautomatic pistols and double-action revolvers, the Scout is available in right or left hand designs in natural finish, with black mouthband.

Great, but not quite perfect for CC

This review is on the Galco Scout Clip-on holster for Ruger SP-101. Firstly, the item in the photo is not the exact holster you will receive as it does not picture the holster for the SP-101 (as of this writing). However, it is very representative and the size is proportional to the SP-101. The older model (if you should find a deal on it pre-owned) has a dark brown leather instead of the black dyed leather around the clip. The new black is nicely done and matches the clip nicely. The only other difference from the stock photo here is that there is a black retaining screw just below the trigger guard of the holster (if looking at the handgun in shooting position). The finish is nice and the suede tan leather is hard, though not rough nor smooth. It is not bothersome even to the more sensitive skin around the appendix carry position. Inside the holster is hardened and smoothed suede which significantly eases draw. It is a perfect fit in every dimension. The muzzle reaches the tip of the open end, otherwise, the holster is entirely molded to fit around the outlines of the handgun. No part of the trigger is exposed and even half of the wheel release is covered. The holster also adds negligible weight to the piece as the SP-101 is already hulkingly heavy.However, this holster has its pros and cons. The pros are many, from the leather's fit to finish. The only con that I have found is of the J-clip. The clip slides behind the belt nicely, and to accommodate thick belts, the recurved part of the clip is designed to stick out further than at least I would have hoped. Of course it must fit up and over a tactical belt, but since it curves over the belt, rather than a traditional clip that has a thin sheet of metal going over the belt, there remains a small chunk of plastic that pokes out enough to make a regular t-shirt print. For some this may not be an issue, but I do not have much weight around the middle, and so even a big buckle would print. This clip is certainly no exception. This is just the printing of the clip, and not the SP-101 in the least. Furthermore, I found a slight annoyance. Since the lip is designed to wrap around the rear of the wheel, it collapses back a bit making for a stiffer draw and a ever so slightly collapsed lip that requires a bit of shove to re-holster. The retaining screw will not remedy this, and you will likely scratch the lip overtime since I do not expect wear to make re-holstering more effortless. Though unless you go plinking with this holster, re-holstering is not normally an issue for those who CC. Additionally, this is the same attribute that makes the handgun nicely secured as the weight of a CC'ed SP-101 can be quite nerve-wracking without a thumb-break. In this design, no thumb-break is needed.I am very happy with this holster and it is certainly worth the money. It has replaced my expensive custom pancake holster with flimsy IWB leather loops. I will likely buy another Galco Scout Clip-on in the off chance that this one gets too worn in the future, though I doubt it will be a near future.

Great holster

Good sturdy holster, I ordered mine for a J-frame revolver and it fits perfectly, the gun is snug yet easy to draw highly recommended.
